It is a congenital vertical split of the upper lip which varies from a small deformity of the red vermillion to a complete defect of the lip and maxilla along with nasal deformity.
We aim to reconstruct the aesthetic relationships of the upper lip and create a strong orbicularis oris muscle so as to improve the function of the mouth. I use the Fisher technique which has been proven to have superior results. The gingival defect is corrected in a second stage with a bone transplant from the scull. In any case of nasal deformity, I perform primary rhinoplasty during the first operation.
Lip correction – 3 months of age.
Gingival reconstruction – 8-10 years of age (before dogtooth eruption).
General.
