Hypoplasia of the external ear is called microtia, whereas its aplasia is called anotia. Inner ear is typically normal in both conditions. Microtia may be sporadic or syndromic, in terms of Treacher-Collins syndrome. It is associated with retinoid consumption during pregnancy.

The procedure
We reconstruct the external ear using rib cartilage. I prefer to use the technique of 2 stages as described by Francoise Firmin. Alloplastic material instead of rib cartilage are contraindicated because of the high incidence of infection and extrusion. Ear prothesis is an acceptable alternative for older patients.
