Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is it?

It is the medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed as it travels through the wrist at the carpal tunnel. The main symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and the thumb side of the ring fingers. Weak grip strength may also occur after a long period of time. Electrodiagnostic tests confirm the diagnosis.

The procedure

Carpal tunnel decompression is performed using either open or endoscopy technique. I prefer open technique with zig-zag incisions and lengthening of the transverse ligament. The duration of the operation is 20 minutes.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia.

Recovery

The hand is bandaged and elevated to reduce swelling. I recommend that movement of the fingers starts immediately after the surgery. However, weight lifting and strenuous exercise is permitted after 1 month. Sutures are removed 10 days post-op.
